Cleveland Art Game is a conceptual artwork for which I’ve initiated the design and handed it off to the
core team of THE QUEST, a growing artist-led initiative. I’ve been a part of the group since it was founded in late 2024.
The group’s aims are ambitious, transformative and oriented today around social art, experiential and participatory art. By design, the Cleveland Art Game unfolds over several months and hopes to engage tens of players, maybe hundreds!
My design will now go through a process of engagement, re-design, and polishing with an eye on a roll-out later this year. The concept melds together elements of a scavenger hunt, reality TV, card-deck gaming, and experimental practice.
On a personal note, it follows from my longtime work as an experiential toolmaker, and how this has become re-engaged as a conceptual art practice based around creative ways to evoke and support practical and extraordinary learning.

Quest for the Fest, a growing self-organizing community of Cleveland artists and creatives present their third event the weekend of August 23rd at SPACES in Hingetown. I STAND FOR____FEST promises a carnival of engaging interactive, collaborative and experiential opportunities. I’m pleased to provide three artworks for the invitational group show Yards III. This exhibit anticipates the opening in the Spring of Franklin Yards, another urban residential development and art venue to be filled with works from the collection of Neil and Amy Viny. I’m in the mix of artists who have recently had their art added to the growing collection, one of a handful of collections focused on living regional artists. This exhibit features works of these artists.

Artist/gallerist/curator Susan Snipes pairs with me to present a very very unusual exhibit, Terms of Engagement, at her gallery Understory. The group show is completely about participation and so it enjoins the public to come in an create, conceptualize, join in dialog, improvise, and be a part of a variety of engaging participatory artworks. I will present a conceptual piece Getting to Know based in the renowned Pivot/Proust questionnaires, and, a questionnaire I have devised. I will also be collaborating with Susan on an interactive sound piece.
Susan and I are joined by Linda Post, Marian Wyndgaard, Carol Langley, Richard Ferris, Ross Bochnek, and Rex Young. We are working on an artist’s talk that adds a fourth date to the schedule.

Susan Snipes, gallerist, curator, artist, has invited me to provide two artworks for a group show I Only Have Eyes For You. Her gallery, Understory, is only one of a handful of places in Cleveland that focus on contemporary conceptual and post-conceptual art. Both artworks I will supply utilize diffusion-ai, albeit in two different ways. One is a pure prompt piece and the other uses an original photograph in a recursive diffusion process. Both pieces are weird! (Pictured to the left is Pareidolia Study, Anima Style.)

Because a section of my art is zealously surreal, it was easy to supply a piece, Memory Function Box, to The Oddball Show at Stella’s Art Gallery. The juror gave a thumbs up. The artwork is among my most successful examples of my amalgamation of original photography, diffusion/AI technology, and both recursive and stochastic processing. It is odd and surreal.

SINGULART, headquartered in Paris, France, has, with the aid of a recruiter, pulled me through the application process and added me to their curated roster of international artists. SINGULART’s artist roster numbers less than 8,000, which is a modest total compared to, for example, Saatchi, or Fine Art America, both of which platform many hundreds of thousands of artists.
In addition to their more focused roster, SINGULART leverages their expertise as an art advisory to work with their artists to market and merchandise their art works. They even assign a representative for the sake of this mission. As always, my various partnerships constitute experiments and here my hypothesis is straightforward: sell my art into European collections. I’m starting off with ten artworks in a measured roll-out. So far I really like all the thought they put into their infrastructure.

Much to my delight, my iPhone shot of our Maine coon mix, Sonny, was juried through a national call for the Cleveland Photo Fest exhibit Catography. This is the first time I submitted a non-iterative image to a juried exhibit.
Sonny (Lipkin the Pipkin) was the most spectacular cat of the many many that have come into my life starting in the nineteen fifties. As we like to say “he was a people person” with “thousands of expressions.” The photograph is poignant because it was taken several weeks before he passed away from pancreatitis at the age of eleven.

My large artwork Alignocturne has been selected and purchased by the Cleveland Art Association. It joins other works in their 2024 collection. CARTA is the steward of a collector’s consortium that meets in the fall of every year to hold a lottery for the sake of placing artworks in their collection of prominent Cleveland area artists with their members. This allows artworks to both cycle through or be purchased and placed in member’s art collections. CARTA uses income to support various art education initiatives and programs in the region. This has been its mission since 1915.

Painter/printmaker/digital artist John Saile and I present Luxuries of Being at The Doubting Thomas Gallery. This duo exhibit is at the moment my biggest splash on the dance card for 2024. It’s a roomy bohemian space so I’m planning on combining new work with a mini-retrospective, looping video, a light box, and recent experiments in printing to African Mahogany veneer.
For my good friend John’s part, he will be presenting a slew of new painting+printmaking works to canvas.
We’ll be talking about our art June 29 at noon and this will be followed by a workshop at 1:30pm; ($15.) My workshops always end with participants receiving a printable collaborative artwork made together on the spot. Space is limited. Register by email.

An iterated photograph printed to veneer, Wisdom Seat has been juried into the group exhibit Mirrored Perspective: The Art of Reflection at a new Cleveland Gallery, Understory Art Cleveland. I especially thrilled because my art practices are essentially centered by both the concrete sense of reflection and the psychological sense of reflection. In the latter case this additionally refers to my background in adult learning theory and experiential learning, both of which are anchored to reflection in its cognitive manifestation.

I am super excited to kick off 2024 with a group show that aims to highlight some of the best collaborative images created by 21 of the participants of two workshops I gave in the fall. The workshops were designed to demonstrate and teach the bare bones of how I build set-ups in small containers. These set-ups provide the subjects for photographs and their subsequent manipulation. Using an iPhone some manipulations were demonstrated during the workshops.
Later, I fashioned completed works from the numerous very ripe outputs of the original collaboration. Thirty or so small artworks make up this show. Together they showcase lots of variety and lots of collaborative verve. Among the collaborators were artists and non-artists — although the latter group are artists for the purpose of this show.
Finally, this is the first time I have integrated my background in adult experiential learning with a group project. This was bound to happen at some point!

A second interactive workshop, associated with my solo show will unfold at Gallery 202 at W.78th Street art complex on Saturdau October 7. It uses the same model of collaborative and experiential learning the workshop at the AAWR uses. In this instance I will haul a rich collection of various materials from my studio to fuel the collaborative creation of source set-ups. These will be informally and (somewhat!) formally photographed, manipulated and shown back to the group. Participants will later receive images finished in my studio.

Kathy Skerritt, the last Cleveland painter, was not only a close friend, she was the person whose mentoring was the most critical to my figuring out what it is to be a late blooming artist. Additionally, we enjoyed each other’s art and art practices, and we both did the wondrous and necessary deep dive that is the foundation of taking any artist very seriously.
In 2019 she gave me bags of sorted-by-color acrylic paint chips. These fragments and shards were scraped off of some of her paintings over many years. As she told me at the time, “I knew she was saving these for this reason, to gift you with them.
With the help of my colleague Kelly Pontoni, we figured out one way to redeploy the chips. To this end I am excited to announce the ‘Skerritt chips’ will make up the material basis for a collaborative workshop at the Artists Archives of the Western Reserve, Beyond Abstraction, and also joins their ongoing series Art Bits.
My background in experiential learning, adult and organizational development underpins the interactive process through which participants will be shown the simple means for iterating source images. Then, together, we will create various sources in boxes and circular containers and then submit them for manipulation and iteration using an iPad and iPhone. Finally, I will finish the images in my digital studio and provide artworks to the participants. Spaces are limited.

Seven large photographic artworks, and one radially iterated generative artwork constitute the first Cleveland solo exhibit of such sizable works since 2016-2017. (Six of the pieces were exhibited last summer at The Mansfield Art Center.)
A Large Transmission unfolds for five weeks at Gallery 202 at [W] 78th Street. I am pleased and honored to enjoy the support of the Gallery 202 crew, and was happy to be on the roster of their predecessor Ramparts.
The artworks represent a big portion of the creme of my output from the pandemic chapter 2020-2021. Along with two older pieces and a single artwork from 2022 this show is an apt portrayal of my immersive aims
